Upcoming Meeting and Calls for Submissions

By  Linda Donaldson

Happy Summer to all you Writers Guild members and followers! We meet this Sunday, August 19th from 1pm to 3pm at the Cultural Center at Pearl S. Buck’s scenic Green Hills Farm in Perkasie. The gardens are blooming and the setting is inspiring. Come join us!

Here’s a list Anne Kaler has shared of upcoming submission deadlines for several publications with links to their details. First up is the ubiquitous Chicken Soup for the Soul series. We show links for their overall guidelines as well as a list of quite a few upcoming deadlines.

Details here for submission guidelines for all types of Chicken Soup for the Soul publications.

Details about the individual themed titles and their deadlines can be found here.

Here are some of their not-so-close deadlines:

Mom Knows Best
We’re looking for your stories about mothers of all ages and types. We want to know the lessons you learned from your mom, stepmom, foster mom, mother-in-law, grandmother, or someone who was like-a-mom to you – what she taught you and how she made you who you are today.

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Life Lessons from the Cat (and Dog)
An upcoming theme for personal anecdotes and poetry from this publisher is Life Lessons from the Cat, about “…what your cat taught you. How he made you smile. How she “rescued” you after you “rescued” her. How she brought your family closer together, helped you find love, inspired you to change something in your human life.

Deadline: 31 October 2018 [dog] 30 November 2018 [cat]
Length: 1,200 words or less

The Golden Years or Second Wind

So, you’re a certain age now, and you’re ready for what’s next. You might be enjoying an empty nest, or starting a second career, or winding down a first one. You might be downsizing, or traveling, or caring for elderly parents.

You might be going on the adventure of a lifetime or taking long walks in the woods. The one thing you know for sure is that you’re not ready to stop living! You feel energetic and young and there is still so much more to see and do and give and enjoy.

We are looking for stories about the humorous or serious sides of life after 60.

Deadline: 30 December 2018
Length: 1,200 words or less
Pay: $200

For those who like stories a little off-center or disturbingly macabre – these following publications might be up your dark alley!

Length: 1,000-5,000 words
Pay: $0.03/word

Red Room Press: American Psychos – A Serial Killer Anthology

The editors are looking for brutal, graphic and violent stories.

Thanks, Anne, for all your inspiration! And, to all writers in the Guild – Keep Writing!
